Doctor Strange and Red Guardian duke it out with Plantman’s giant, toxic flower. But when hallucinatory agents are added to the fray…all bets are off! Luckily Power Man is on the scene. Valkyrie struggles with her morality, and cellmates, behind bars.
The Hulk, angry that the veterinarians aren’t helping the wounded flying horse Aragorn fast enough, gets in a fight with the police. After destroying a helicopter, he jumps away.
Dr. Strange, Red Guardian, and the unconscious Kyle Richmond are all caught in a plant-trap made by Plant-man, who is holding Richmond hostage for a ransom. Strange’s spells are, strangely, not working.
Jack Norriss, seeing that they’re in trouble, calls up Luke Cage for help.
Strange finally gets his magic to work. He sends Kyle back to the hospital and he and Red Guardian attack Plant-man. Plant-man gets the drop on them with some giant plant spores that grab them and start floating up into space. They get out, and return to the street, where Cage has shown up, and Plant-man has escaped.
Meanwhile, Valkyrie (who the Defenders are all looking for) is stuck in women’s prison, where she is harassed by a fellow prisoner. Unfortunately, Val is enchanted so that she can’t use her powers against other women.
Plant-man shows up at the Celestial Mind Control headquarters, realizing he does need the help of his former associates, Porcupine and Eel, after all. Nebulon, in his human guise, shows him in, where he sees his friends destroying copies of themselves in order to be free of their pasts. Plant-man thinks this is nuts, but Nebulon blasts him.
Strange and the other Defenders visit Nightwing in the hospital. Kyle agrees to pay Luke Cage a retainer so he can profitably join the group when needed. Kyle tells Strange he is having a hard time adjusting back to normalcy after having his brain taken out of his body and then replaced. Strange, however, thinks Kyle’s questioning of reality is a sign of maturity. As Strange leaves, he is ambushed by Eel and Porcupine, who gas him, as they already have gassed Norriss, Red Guardian, and Cage.
