However, while they are talking, tehy feel reality suddenly start to flicker on and off. Strange is suddenly pulled away to talk with Eternity, who explains that long ago, he split off parts of himself to get a sense of what \"difference\" and \"otherness\" means, since he normally is everything, and thus all the same. He eventually brought most of those parts back to himself, and thus learned about their lives and gained understanding from them. However, three parts were apparently kept away, and now the universe is in danger, because Eternity is not whole.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eStrange contacts a few groups of Defenders, and sends them to different parts of the world to find the missing pieces of Eternity, while he and some other mystics try to keep Eternity together.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDaimon Hellstrom and Hellcat--who meet here for the first time, and begin to bond over their mutual problems with their parents--are sent to a temple in India. They are attacked by some temple followers, who think they kidnapped their yogi, who is missing. However, they realize the yogi is the piece of Eternity they're looking for, and they are given directions to find him. They battle a copy of the Hindu monkey god, Hanuman, and follow a trail to another temple.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Hulk and Nighthawk are sent to Siberia, where they battle some snow giants and protect a village. The villagers tell them that an orphan they adopted has been taken. They follow the trail, and are almost magically frozen, but break out of the ice and see an ice temple.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eValkyrie and Namor are sent to a Mediterranean shore, and fight some guards that attack them, but soon the woman in charge tells them that her husband has been taken. They go to a nearby island, fighting some mystical monsters on the way. When they arrive on the island, they too find a temple.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAll three pairs go inside their own temples, and arrive in the same mystic interdimensional space. The three pieces of Eternity are there. They were not kidnapped, but have intentionally kept themselves separated from Eternity--their time among humanity has made them treasure their individuality. They defeat the other Defenders, but Nighthawk convinces them that they would be rejecting their humanity if they let the rest of the universe die. They go back to Eternity, and find peace.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen the Defenders return, Dr. Strange congratulates Nighthawk for showing his own worth and humanity. He says that he amazing agility, which she realized in issue 83 was not due to her costume, was actually due to her demonic heritage. Her best friend, Valkyrie, tries to persuade her to reject this, but she says she was never her friend.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe other major demons in attendance--Mephisto, Thog, and Satannish--variously called Satan's brothers and his other manifestations--hope he gets on with his endgame: once in a while, the universe allows the forces of evil a chance to take over the Earth. It takes 6 days, 6 hours, and 6 minutes to achieve, but if successful, they will be in control for a dozen ages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe gives the Defenders a deal where if they can defeat the other demons in certain trials, they can save Earth. The Defenders agree.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHulk, Namor, and Dr. Strange end up reliving a scene where they fought the disciples of Dormammu early in the Defenders' career. Namor and Hulk get separated from Strange, and are attacked by recreations of Xemnu and Yandroth, who defeat them. Strange finds them and Satannish, and almost saves them when they are all killed in a volcanic blast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSatan tries to seduce Daimon Hellstrom over to evil, while making him recoil at the concept that he is in love with someone he know believes to be his sister.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNighthawk, Gargoyle, and Devil-slayer are in the middle of a giant battle, where the soldiers are warriors killed in wars throughout time. They taunt Nighthawk, who didn't get drafted due to his bad heart, Devil-slayer for the war crimes he engaged in in Viet-nam, and Gargoyle for the fact that his friend died in World War I, but he survived. Nigthawk manages to persuade the dead soldiers to join them, but then Thog kills them all with four nuclear bombs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSatan tells Daimon he must choose to join him, or suffer in hell.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eClea, Valkyrie, and Silver Surfer appear in a blank space. Mephisto tempts them all with their desires, but they reject his overtures. They seem to defeat him, but then they are dissolved into the space.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll the Defenders, having lost, appear back on Earth, where time has passed, and Hell has almost taken over. Satan orders Patsy to kill Daimon. They battle, and Daimon almost kills her, but his love for her keeps him from doing it. He now challenges Satan; Satan accepts if the Defenders agree to keep out of it. They agree. However, Daimon is no match for him, and Strange and the Defenders send him their energy to enhance Daimon's darksoul, breaking their oath and making Daimon more evil--the only way he can win. Still Satan defeats him again, and almost kills him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, just as Daimon could not kill Patsy due to his love, Satan cannot kill Daimon due to his love for him. In finding the light in his darkness, Satan agrees to leave. Daimon, now evil due to the Defenders' intervention, agrees to join him after all. Satan releases Patsy from her demonic form. Strange uses the Eye of Agomotto on the Tribunal, and finds that it is indeed true.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Tribunal further explain: the alien ship came from the planet Mikkaz; the aliens are called the Kamado. They were a warrior race, and conquered many systems. However, the king's son, the prince, was a pacifist. He wanted nothing to do with their wars.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMeanwhile back in our time, the Beast, Iceman, and Gargoyle coem back from a night of drinking to find several surprises: Valkyrie is back, and is now trying to help Moondragon learn to set aside her ego and live a normal (i.e., non-evil) life on Earth. Moondragon, who considers herself a goddess, is not entirely on board with this idea, but Odin put a headband on her that keeps her from using her powers for evil. The others are not very excited to work with her either.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAngel, however, has also decided to come say hello and stay with them, and Beast and Iceman are very happy to see him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, Mad-Dog has been snooping around, and learns that the Defenders are going to Patsy Walker's (his ex-wife) wedding. He tells the Secret Empire.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Tribunal explains that the alien prince gained a cult following and left his father's kingdom, eventually crashing on Earth. He and his followers killed themselves because they thought the Defenders were agents of his father, and he didn't want to return. His father is in fact trying to hunt him down--his honor requires that he destroy all evidence of the prince, including his body. So when they eventually find Earth, they seed it with a gas that kills all life, and ultimately destroys the entire planet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe only way to avoid this, the Tribunal explains, is if the original Defenders break up, and never get back together again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe current Defenders travel off to Patsy and Daimon's wedding. They have a good time, until Mad-Dog and the Mutant Force attack. After a difficult battle, the Defenders win and Patsy and Daimon are married.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeast then asks Iceman, Angel, Gargoyle, and Valkyrie if they want to start an official standing team of Defenders, which has always officially been a non-team. Nebulon escaped his seeming doom at the hands of the Defenders back in issue 14 when he was accidentally transported to the dimension of the Ludberdites, a peaceful reptilian race. Under them, he came to believe it was his duty to help humanity achieve salvation (according to his definition).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNebulon thus has the Ludberdites capture some humans (as seen in previous issues) to learn more about them. He sends Norris\/Nighthawk to the strange island where the others are being kept. There, a faun, in which the mind of Chondu now resides, attacks Norris\/Nighthawk, wanting its brain back. The other humans hold it back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Strange and Hulk get out of the Headmen’s goop. A neighbor, whose house Hulk wrecked a long time ago, berates them, so Hulk throws some debris at his new house, knocking it apart. Strange teleports them back to his mansion, where they catch up with Valkyrie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVal, looking at Norriss’s body, feels empathy with him for the first time. Her spirit inhabits the body of Norriss’s ex-wife, and she has mostly felt nothing for him, but now starts to access some of Barbara’s feelings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA flaming meteor crashes into Times Square, and a little old man emerges. He says he wants to help everyone access their mental powers. However, the Hulk is leaping by, and can see through the illusion—he knows this is Nebulon, who took the faun, which Hulk thinks of as his friend Bambi. He attacks Nebulon, whose real appearance is revealed. Nebulon quickly dispatches the Hulk by putting him in a bubble and sending him off towards space.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNebulon returns to his nebbish illusion-self and quickly gains a crowd of people who want to learn from him. He says he is going to teach a seminar on Celestial Mind Control that night, and some women follow him as he gets ready.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Hulk breaks his bubble and falls to Earth. He sees a leaflet for the seminar and brings it to Strange.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJack and the other abductees start to feel weak due to the Ludberdites’ machines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVal, Strange, and Hulk go to Nebulon’s seminar in disguise. When one of the security guards wants to get a little gropey with Val in the name of a security check, she makes it clear that she will not stand for such nonsense from a weak male.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnstage, Nebulon (in his small bald man guise) berates the audience, telling them they’re all bozos, and are in need of his help. He has them all put on clown masks that he left under his seat. Strange is invited up on stage as a volunteer. Nebulon makes all the abductees appear, now under his mental control. They all mumble “bozo” while the women Nebulon found on the street dance around in cheerleader costumes. Banner asks Clea to send a mystic call for help to the people who have temporarily joined the Defenders in the past: Silver Surfer, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Daimon Hellstrom, Hawkeye, and Namor. She uses the Orb of Agamotto to contact Hellstrom and Daredevil, but then faints from the pressure of using the powerful object.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBanner calls Luke Cage on the phone. Cage, Daredevil, and Hellstrom all show up, with Hellstrom's arrival in a chariot of hellfire-ringed horses being a bit different from the other two. Clea and Banner explain what's going on, and note that they have one of the Sons of the Serpent prisoner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYellowjacket uses his shrinking powers to shrink out of his constraints, now that the Sons have left on their mission, with Valkyrie. Pym tries to release Nighthawk, but can't. He explores the base, and discovers it is underwater, with no exit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHellstrom uses his magic to get their prisoner to talk, but he was under a hypnotic suggestion to keep him from doing so. Cage uses the direct approach and beats the Son up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, they are interrupted by Elena, the woman the Defenders had gone to the tenement to save last issue. She shows them a TV news report where the Sons have put Valkyrie on an upside-down cross and are going to burn her alive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJack Norriss, who still doesn't really get that Val is not his wife, Barbara, runs off to save her. Banner changes into the Hulk, and the Defenders all go to Val's rescue. However, before they get there, Hellstrom and Cage disappear in a flash.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHulk and Daredevil start beating up the Sons, but Daredevil is uncharacteristically overwhelmed and knocked out from behind, and the Sons use a ray to blind the Hulk. Clint randomly decides to force a kiss on Val, who takes a swing at him with her sword before deciding that maybe she actually liked the nonconsensual kiss.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHawkeye thinks of all the \"mixed-up\" women he has been connected with, from Black Widow and Scarlet Witch to the Norse warrior goddess, but is interrupted in his decidedly non-politically correct reveries by the sight of Iron Man.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIron Man visits the local university, which has the piece of the Eye. However, Hawkeye snatches the Eye out of his hands with a boomeranging grapple-arrow.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHawkeye and Iron Man battle, with Hawkeye doing surprisingly well due to his trick arrows. Then when Iron Man is forced to accidentally blast a building, and has to save the inhabitants, Clint takes advantage and takes off with the Eye.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDr. Strange looks for another piece of the Eye in a cornfield. Mantis and Black Panther are also there. Strange finds it first and decides to take it away in an undercover manner, pretending to be a normal person waiting at a bus. Mantis and Panther talk to the people at the bus but don't realize it's him until Mantis's senses pick up on his magic.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDisocvered, Strange flies off but Panther pursues him. They battle, and gain the attention of a local, who shoots at them with his shotgun. Luckily Mantis intervenes, and saves them. She attacks Strange, who shockingly dodges her attack like few heroes ever have, using his monastery-trained skills. They all decide to go to Los Angeles to stop Thor and Hulk from battling. While explaining that the Defenders are not an ordinary team, Namor is suddenly transported away. Realizing the crystal is still tracking Namor, Val and Namorita decide to go and pick up the Hulk before going after him. However, when the two get to the Hulk, the Hulk in his misplaced rage attacks. During his initial strike he too is transported away, Val and Namorita then decide to find out where they were transported.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are brought to the location where the Defenders previously fought the computer the Omegatron, there the computer captures the two and informs them in spite of the fact that it's trapped in a bubble of slower time it still will end up finishing it's countdown and destroy the Earth. When the Omegatron reaches zero it breaks free of it's computer housing in a gigantic humanoid form. However before it can speak it's masters name, Val chops it's head off, destroying it and saving the world. He realized that this was because the Headmen (unknown to the rest of the team, but witnessed by him) had experimented on the Defenders' brains. He could see that the Defenders weren't paying enough to the Headmen due to their own problems, and so Jack would look into them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRealizing he's right, the Defenders decide to investigate strange events related to Nebulon and the Headmen in Paris, India, and Washington, DC.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Strange sends Nighthawk and Red Guardian to Paris, where they stop the execution of a man by the Nebulon-brainwashed Bozo clowns. He tells them about a group called Compagnie De Lux. Red Guardian takes the Bozo's outfit and goes undercover at the local Celestial Mind Control (CMC) group, which is run by Nebulon in his human disguise. However, he sees through her disguise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMeanwhile Nighthawk discovers that De Lux is run by the Headmen, who in turn were trying to buy out the CMC group. De Lux owns a bunch of stuff, including in India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNighthawk tries to rescue Red Guardian, but the whole CMC building is shrunk down by a ray from Jerry Morgan, who then knocks Nighthawk out with gas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn India, Luke Cage and Val find a reputed cult of killers. However, they find that they're not killing locals, but shrinking them down. Arthur Nagan confronts them, and gasses Cage. The cult explains that shrinking the people is their solution to overpopulation! She is then gassed, shrunk, and captured as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJack Norriss, using his funds from being bought off by Nighthawk, acts like a James-Bond-style secret agent. He infiltrates Ruby Thursday's presidential campaign. However, she realizes who he is. She knocks him out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Strange teleports the President (Gerald Ford) to another dimension, where he can talk about the problems with Nebulon and the Headmen. Nebulon shows up in the other dimension himself, and argues for why his brand of mind control is good for everyone. They battle, and Nebulon defeats Strange via a sneak attack from the rear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBack in Washington, Nebulon forces the president to hold a ceremony appointing him as Ambassador to the United Nations. However, Dr. Strange returns and is intervenes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, the Headmen intervene more. They shrink Nebulon and Strange down and have them join the other Defenders in a dome. Luckily, Strange sent Hulk to attack the Headmen's HQ, and he breaks the dome. Nebulon brings them all back to normal size, and they defeat the Headmen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStrange then uses the Eye of Agamotto to convince Nebulon that humanity is in fact not better off being mind-controlled.
