The most eagerly-awaited sequel in comics begins! Three years after the events in THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, Batman knows the world is nowhere near the perfect little place it pretends to be, and he sees the cracks in the system that have been neatly covered up. It’s time to find where all the heroes have gone, and the Dark Knight is the right man for the job.
Three years after disappearing into the shadows, Batman and his allies decide the time is right to return once again.
The issue opens with Carrie Kelley (now called Catgirl) rescuing the Atom from a petri dish, where he was being held by the government. At the same time we find out there is a planet killing asteroid heading towards earth. Superman is still a lap dog of the state, but this time it is only because the government is holding the bottled city of Kandor hostage. As Carrie rescues the Atom, Batman rescues the Flash who has been forced to run in a human-sized hamster wheel that powers a giant energy generator that runs most of the United States power grid. When the grid collapses, Superman’s “handlers” send him to take out the Batman once and for all.
