In the ruins of Zodanga, John Carter, Tars Takas, and Dejah Thoris discover a lone Red Man who has been spying on them. He is captured and taken to Helium for questioning. Refusing to speak after several waves of interrogation, the prisoner is given an ultimatum–speak or face execution. During the night he escapes with plans to destroy the planet Barsoom.
