Spawn/Batman #1

DC’s Comics Batman versus Image’s Spawn. This is a companion piece to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Written by Frank Miller, with art by Todd McFarlane.

Batman travels to New York City, to investigate a series of brutal murders, the killer has apparently engaged in cutting the heads off of his victims! This killer also holds high tech weapons and equipment and wants the brains of the homeless to operate his creations, thus the decapitations. When Batman meets Spawn, the pair mistake each other for the enemy, and engage in a series of battles, but upon realizing that they are after the same perpetrator, they work together operating on a strained relationship.

Connection

Though the book does not show evidence of appearing in Batman’s nor Spawns main continuity, the book bridges a gap in Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Universe, (previously known as Earth-31). It is believed that the book takes place somewhere in between All Star Batman, and The Dark Knight Returns, but this is only speculation. There is speculation that a scar across Spawns face that shows in Spawn #22, is the result of a Batarang thrown during a fight that the two engaged in. This is backed with evidence in the same issue with Spawn saying that he fought “a bozo in black”.
